A law school once named the worse law school in New York is living up to that reputation. On Dec. 13, 2015, Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Long Island, New York sent out by email over 17,000 offers of admission to people who never even applied. The law school quickly realized their mistake, and later in the evening sent out an email correcting their previous offer of admission. Unfortunately, only one student actually applied but was refused admission.
The readership of the law blog, Above the Law, once named Touro Law School the “Worst Law School in New York,” and this stunt proves they deserve the honor. On New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31 at 6:36 p.m., Touro Law sent out a congratulatory email, with the subject line, “Message from Dean Salkin – Touro Law” to 17,572 shocked individuals who had never even applied. The email formally from Dean Patricia Salkin started by expressing, “Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to the profession!”
Three hours later, just before 10 p.m., the school sent out their correction email with the subject heading, “Please Pardon the Gaffe.” The email was also addressed from Dean Salkin, and read, “Earlier tonight you received an email in error from Touro Law Center. Please disregard the message caused by a malfunction. We are investigating the genesis of the error and apologize for any inconvenience.”
The law school’s Director of Communications Patti Desrochers explained to Fox News, “It was noticed in minutes and the correction email was sent out within three hours.” Touro later explained the names and contact information came from a list of prospective students, who had inquired about admission, but never followed up on an application. Touro promised they have now “put safeguards in place to ensure this will not happen again.”
